About This Cause
In September 2020, CYE BELIEVE NETWORK visited the Karusandara seed SS camp in Kasese district where the people faced a number of challenges brought about by the climate crisis. The major cause of these hectic challenges was due to the flooding of River Mubuku and River Sebwe where the floods washed off several villages of Karusandara Sub county displacing over 4,000 households to makeshift camps like Sebwe, Kabuga camp, Kabaka camp and Karusandara since May 2020.
Crops worth millions like vanilla ,cocoa ,rice ,maize ,tomatoes ,cassava as well as animal grazing grounds were destroyed most of which got submerged. Footbridges and some roads were also destroyed making it difficult for people to access basic services like health care where the main bridge linking Karusandara seed SS to Kyalanga Parish HC was washed off. Boreholes got submerged thus contamination of water hence high risk to disease like malaria and cholera. The people in the camp also faced shortage of supplies like tents, food supplies ,sanitary pads ,mattresses ,safe drinking water and clothes.
Although the camp was blessed to have a rescue team in case of these floods, they lacked protective gear like gloves, gumboots, marine head socks and life jackets which led to provision of basic necessities like food and mattresses, agricultural supplies like seeds and herbicides in form of emergency relief and it tries to tackle the issue of flooding of these Rivers since many people including expectant mothers and children were greatly affected.
